China an Emerging Superpower? By Lyman Miller (2006)

People have been predicting China’s emergence as a superpower since the days of Napoleon, who purportedly appreciated China’s potential as a world power and cautioned against waking the sleeping dragon. China’s subordination into the Western international system in the 1839-1842 Opium War and its decline as the “sick man” of East Asia for the rest of the nineteenth and for the first half of the twentieth centuries dulled, but never extinguished, the expectation that, sooner or later, China would again dominate the world.

Several recent events have provoked the latest announcements of China’s looming ascent to superpower stature and have suggested that these long-held expectations are, at long last, coming true. In October 2003, China launched its first human into space, joining the United States and the former Soviet Union as the only countries to have done so. American media have recently taken notice of China’s efforts to expand and diversify its access to sources of oil in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and unsettlingly close to home Canada. The world’s industrial economies, including the United States, have inferred from the giant sucking sound created by lost manufacturing jobs and from the flood of Chinese exports into their markets that China is becoming the world’s manufacturing hub. Meanwhile, analysts ponder the implications for global security of China’s military modernization effort, now two decades long, and its promise to develop a “revolution in military affairs with Chinese characteristics.”

As portentous as the events may seem, there are good reasons to be skeptical that China will achieve superpower stature anytime soon. By all measures of international power, China has a long way to go to rival the power in international affairs of the United States in the manner that the Soviet Union did.

My Learning from the Movie, Flood (Released in 2007)

Storyline

How are Tsunamis Created?

A tsunami (Japanese: 津波, lit. "harbor wave";^[1] Japanese pronunciation: [tsɯnami]; English pronunciation: /tsuːˈnɑːmi/ tsoo-NAH-mee or /suːˈnɑːmi/ soo-NAH-mee^[2]) is a series of water waves (also called a tsunami wave train^[3]) caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, usually an ocean, though it can occur in large lakes. Tsunamis are a frequent occurrence in Japan; approximately 195 events have been recorded.^[4] Owing to the immense volumes of water and the high energy involved, tsunamis can devastate coastal regions.
Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions (including detonations of underwater nuclear devices), landslides and other mass movements, meteorite ocean impacts or similar impact events, and other disturbances above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami.

From Ordinary to Extra Ordinary: Story of Viqar-ul-Islam (Country Manager-Nokia Siemens Pakistan)

This is the story of Viqar-ul-Islam (Country Manager-Nokia Siemens Pakistan). In this story he describes how he changed his life from a poor man to one of the richest in Pakistan. He stated, there are certain factors behind his massive success in life. Here are those factors:

1. Have a Dream

In his early age he wished to become a doctor - he couldn't, since he was unable to pay for the expenses. He had 9 siblings (I doubt my memory) and according to him his father's income was not that strong to support the education of all his children.

Then he wanted to become a singer - he couldn't since he family (esp. his mother) didn't allow. he wanted to become a singer because he found his singing would help him earn money for his education. During this time he was giving home tuition to generate some additional income.

After completing his BCom he decided to do MBA from IBA (Karachi) - he joined BBA classes and failed the first semester and was fired from IBA. Aaahhhhh..... This was the turning point in his life. He did not give up and sought other possibilities. He found that an equivalent possibility was MCom (with very low grade - 45% marks. He told he was not a high achiever till his graduation.). In his MCom he struggled hard and got 5th position. Hurray...!

2. Visit Yourself

Make yourself accountable for your failure or success.

3. Be Different

Learn the power of being different because successful people are different.

4. Always Look for Solution    

Be a solution-oriented person.

5. Take Initiative

Only making plans or dreaming high is not enough one should take action.

I Think Steve Jobs (CEO Apple Inc.) Made a Big Mistake!

I just happened to watch an episode of Dragon's Den. Dragons' Den is a series of reality television programmes featuring entrepreneurs pitching their business ideas in order to secure investment finance from a panel of venture capitalists.

The following link will show what happened to Steve Jobs when he pitched his idea of iPad to the panel of so-called Dragons. Hahaha!

My opinion:
I think Steve Jobs took his product to inappropriate people. These people were unable to perceive the worth of the product.

My Recommendation: Watch other episodes of Dragon's Den on You tube. Other episodes are not so disappointing.  Simply write Dragon's Den in the search area of You tube and many episodes of the programme will pop up.    

Book Review: Authentic Leadership

I ve started reading "Authentic Leadership" by Bill George and hope I ll be able to complete reading this book by March 2011. Here are a few points I have gathered so far.

In the intro of the book George claims that authentic leaders of mission-driven companies will create far greater shareholder value than financially oriented companies.

I am reading further to find how he supports his this claim.
